Google Local Services Ads in Canada: are they worth it for contractors?
What the Google Verified ads at the top of the page actually are, who qualifies, and how to judge them.
The short answer
Google Local Services Ads are pay-per-lead ads that appear at the top of Google for local service searches, with leads coming in as calls and messages. In Canada they are open only to certain categories, including HVAC, plumbers, roofers and electricians, and you need to pass Google's checks. They are worth it when you answer every lead fast and track which ones turn into jobs.
What Local Services Ads are
Search "furnace repair near me" and you may see a row of businesses above the normal ads, often with a Google Verified badge. Those are Local Services Ads. According to Google's Local Services Ads help page for Canada, you receive leads directly as phone calls and messages through your ad, and you can track leads and bookings and ask customers for reviews.
The key difference from regular Google Ads: you pay for leads, not clicks.
Who qualifies in Canada
Google lists the eligible service categories on that same help page. They include HVAC, plumbers, roofers, electricians, locksmiths, appliance repair, pest control, tree services, water damage services and several others. General contractors and renovation companies are not on the list, so most renovators will need to rely on local SEO and their Google Business Profile instead.
To go live you must pass Google's onboarding checks, which typically cover your business details, licensing and insurance where required, and background checks. Google also offers pre-badge ads while you finish those checks.
When they pay off, and when they don't
Local Services Ads tend to work for trades with urgent, high-value jobs, such as a no-heat call in January or a roof leak after a storm. They work badly for businesses that can't answer the phone. A lead you pay for and then miss is the most expensive kind of missed call.
Three things decide whether they're worth it for you:
- Answer rate. If calls go to voicemail while you're on a job, fix that before you spend. See our guide to missed call text back and AI receptionists.
- Reviews. Your rating and review count show on the ad. A thin profile makes every lead harder to win.
- Tracking. Mark which leads became booked jobs. Without that, you only know what you spent, not what you earned.
How to judge the cost
Cost per lead varies by trade, city and season, and Google sets it by auction, so treat any published average with caution. The number that matters is yours: what you paid per booked job, compared with your average job value and margin. Track it for a full season before deciding.
Where they fit
Local Services Ads are a tap you can turn on and off, which is useful in busy seasons. They don't replace a strong profile and website, because when you pause the ads, those are what's left. The best results come when all three work together.
